What actually drives the price
Whether an operator comes with it. This is the largest single factor. A bare unit at $75 to $125 a day and an operated package at $995 are not the same product, and the gap is almost entirely labour. If nobody on your crew has run a prompter before, the operated package is the honest comparison.
Presidential versus camera-mounted. A presidential prompter uses two angled glass panels on stands either side of a lectern, so a speaker can work a room rather than read down a lens. It is the setup used for keynotes and executive addresses. Camera-mounted prompters sit in front of the lens for pieces to camera. The presidential configuration runs about $300 a day more in published rates.
Day length. The $995 and $1,295 rates are quoted against a 10-hour day. Anything past that is normally an overtime rate, which none of the vendors publish, so it is worth asking before you book rather than after.
Weekly hire. ShareGrid's $250 per day against $1,000 per week means a week costs the same as four days. If you are shooting across a week, the daily rate stops being the right unit.
Who rents teleprompters in San Francisco
Two kinds of vendor, and they price differently.
Dedicated prompter specialists supply the unit and a trained operator and do little else. Eyeline Teleprompting and Tanner Teleprompting both cover the Bay Area this way. Neither publishes a rate card, and neither has a Google Business Profile we could locate, so they do not appear in our scored ranking.
Full-service AV and production houses carry prompters as one line among many. WestWave AV and Luma Creative both publish teleprompter rentals as a named service. This is usually the better route when the prompter is one part of a larger shoot or event, because the same crew is already on site.
What the published rate usually does not include
Delivery and collection, unless stated. Overtime past the quoted day. Scripting or script loading, if you want someone else to format the copy. And a second unit for redundancy, which matters more than people expect on a live keynote where a failed prompter stops the show.
